Question Words - Who, What...

How to Ask More Specific Questions in Korean

In this lesson we’ll learn how to use question words in Korean. More specifically, we’ll learn the words for who, what, where, when, why, and how.

Who?

The word for “who” is 누구:

어제 누구를 만났어요?

Who did you meet yesterday?

누가* 한국어를 가르쳐요?

Who teaches Korean?

*Since we’re asking about someone who is performing an action (teaching), we’ll use the subject marker here. 누구가 simply becomes 누가.

누구야*?

Who is it?

*야 is the casual form of 이다. It’s “이야” after a consonant and “야” after a noun.

What?

”What” in Korean is 무엇 (noun), but is shortened to 뭐 in speech. 무엇 is mainly used in formal writing.

이게* 예요?

What is this?

*이게 is the contracted form of 이것이.

직업이 예요?

What is your job?

When used with the object market, you can use either 뭘 or just 뭐:

할 거예요?

What will you do?

light bulb

Did you know?

There are other ways to say “what” depending on the context!

어떤 is an adjective. It goes before a noun and is used to say “which” or “what kind of?”

어떤 것을 보고 싶어?
What (thing) do you want to watch?
어떤 차 좋아해?
What kind of car do you like?

어느 and 무슨 also mean “which” or “what kind of?” However, 어떤 is more commonly used.

You can think of 어떤 as asking for a specific detail about something, whereas 무슨 is more of a general “what kind of?”

어떤 영화를 보고 싶어요?
What kind of movie do you want to watch (comedy, romance, drama, etc)?
무슨 영화를 보고 싶어요?
What movie do you want to watch (name of movie)?
Where?

”Where” in Korean is 어디.

어디에* 살아요?

Where do you live?

어디가 좋아요?

Where is good?

*어디에 is often just shortened to 어디 when talking about a location.

어디 갈 거예요?

Where will you go?

어디 is often paired with 까지 (until):

지하철을 어디까지 탈 거예요?

How far/until where will you take the subway?

When?

The word for “when” in Korean is 언제:

언제가 좋아요?

When is good?

그 영화를 언제 봤어요?

When did you see that movie?

You can also pair 언제 with 까지:

한국에서* 언제까지 있을 거예요?

Until when will you be in Korea?

*에서 is a particle paired with a location (noun) when discussing an action happening at that location. We’ll learn about this in detail later on.

언제 can also be paired with 부터 (from) to mean “from when” or “since when”:

언제부터 한국어를 공부했어요?

Since when have you been studying Korean?

Why?

The Korean word for “why” is :

요?

Why (informal polite form)?

그걸* 했어요?

Why did you do that?

*그걸 is a contraction of 그것 (that) + 을 (object marker).

한국에 가고 싶으세요?

Why do you want to go to Korea?

How?

The word for “how” is 어떻게. It’s an adverb.

그건 어떻게 할 수 있어요?

How can I do that?

서울역에 어떻게 가요?

How do I get to Seoul Station?

light bulb

Did you know?

There are other ways to say “how,” depending on the situation! 어떻게 is used to talk about mannerisms or the way something is done/came to be.

Here are some other ways to say “how” in Korean:

어때 also means “how” and is used to talk about feelings, or someone’s opinion.

오늘 기분이 어때요?
How are you feeling today?
서울 날씨는 어때요?
How’s the weather in Seoul?

얼마 means “how much” and is used to talk about money:

There are still other question words we haven’t covered, like “몇” (meaning how many). We’ll cover these later!

See you in the next lesson!
